What Is a Thesis Statement?
The thesis statement is the sentence that communicates the main idea and direction of your essay. For this assignment, your thesis should identify the two subjects being compared, communicate whether you will focus on similarities, differences, or both, and preview the major points of comparison you will develop.
Your thesis acts as a road map for your reader. After reading it, your reader should have a clear idea of what the essay will examine.

Now the reader knows that the essay will primarily examine differences.
Preview Your Points of Comparison
Your thesis should directly preview the major points of comparison that will appear in your body paragraphs.
If your comparison points are:
- Social style
- Career goals
- Approach to money
then all three should be recognizable in your thesis.
Although Jasmine and I have been close friends for many years, we differ considerably in our social styles, career goals, and approaches to money.
This creates a clear connection between the thesis and the structure of the essay.

The comparison points promised in your thesis should be the comparison points you actually develop.
If your thesis previews management style, workplace culture, and work-life balance, your body paragraphs should develop those three areas. Don’t preview one set of ideas in the thesis and then shift to unrelated points in the body of the essay.
Likewise, if you change your comparison points while drafting, revise your thesis to match. Your thesis isn’t permanently locked once you’ve written your introduction.
