What is a Compare/Contrast Essay?

A compare/contrast essay examines two subjects by exploring their similarities (compare), differences (contrast), or both. Rather than simply describing each subject, the writer considers them in relation to one another using meaningful points of comparison. The goal is to help readers better understand the subjects and the relationship between them.


Why Write a Compare/Contrast Essay?

Comparing and contrasting helps us understand subjects more deeply by considering them in relation to one another. By examining meaningful similarities and differences, you can identify patterns, recognize important distinctions, evaluate alternatives, and develop new insights. In a compare/contrast essay, the goal is not simply to show that two subjects are alike or different—it is to help your reader understand why those similarities or differences matter.
